This is the easiest way to get rid of the icon. You can right-click on the date/time in Taskbar system tray and select “Customize notification icons” option. It’ll open a new window. Now look for GWX (Get Windows 10) entry in the list and change its value to “Hide icon and notifications” using the drop-down box.
Apply the changes and it’ll hide the White Windows flag icon in Taskbar notification area.
PS: If the options (drop-down boxes) to change behaviors are grayed out or disabled, then uncheck “Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar” checkbox and it’ll allow you to customize icons behaviors.
METHOD 2: Kill “Get Windows 10 (GWX)” Process Using Task Manager:
If you don’t want to use the above mentioned method, you can kill the process related to “Get Windows 10” app and it’ll automatically remove the icon from Taskbar.
1. Right-click on Taskbar and select Task Manager option. It’ll open Task Manager. You can also directly launch Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys together.
2. Now go to Processes or Details tab and select GWX process and then click on “End Process” button. You can also right-click on GWX process and select “End Process” or “End Task” option. Or you can simply select GWX process and press Delete key.
It’ll kill GWX process and will also remove its icon from Taskbar notification area. If the icon is still visible, just hover mouse cursor over it and it’ll magically disappear.
METHOD 3: Disable “Get Windows 10” Using Registry Editor:
If you follow above mentioned method, it’ll remove the app and its icon temporarily. After some time or next logon, the app and its icon might come back. Following Registry tweak will disable “Get Windows 10” app and its Taskbar icon permanently:
1. Type regedit in RUN or Start search box and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.
2. Now go to following key:
3. Create a new key under Windows key and set its name as GWX
So the final key path would be:
4. Now select GWX key and in right-side pane create a new DWORD DisableGWX and set its value to 1
5. Close Registry Editor and restart your computer to take effect.
It’ll permanently disable “Get Windows 10” app and will also remove its icon from Taskbar.
In future, if you decide to re-enable the app and its icon, simply change value of DisableGWX DWORD to 0 or delete the DWORD.
PS: If you are not familiar with registry editing tasks, we are also providing ready-made registry script to do the task automatically for your convenience. Just download following ZIP file, extract it and then run the given .REG files to enable/disable GWX app and its icon:

MRT.exe is the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. A new version of this tool is included with the critical updates every month on “Patch Tuesday” (the first Tuesday of the month). It should run once — at the time you download it — and then be dormant for the rest of the month unless you manually start it up.
Apparently, the unnamed person with whom you dealt didn’t fully understand this.
Have you ever received a message to the effect that the MRT found something?
Click Start > Run then type the following in the Run box and click OK
A Windows Explorer window will open and you should see — at least — a file named mrt.log. You may well see another file named mrt.log.old, which is last months log.
Open mrt.log with Notepad. You should see something like the following:
Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool v3.19, May 2011
Started On Wed May 11 01:54:01 2011
No infection found.
Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool Finished On Wed May 11 01:57:25 2011
MRT.exe should not run continuously. If it does, something is wrong.
MRT.exe should be located in C:Windows\system32. If it is not there, search your entire drive, making sure to check the search options to “search system folders, ” “search hidden files and folders,” and “search subfolders.” If you find MRT.exe somewhere other than C:\Windows\system32, it probably is malware masquerading as the real Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Wherever you find it, delete it. You can download the current version of MRT here.
If, after you delete MRT.exe, you get an error message at startup complaining that MRT cannot be found, download and run Autoruns. Click the “Logon” tab and look in the “Image Path” column for the MRT.exe. If it isn’t shown in the Logon tab, click the “Everything” tab and use the File > Search tool. An idiosyncrasy of the Autoruns search tool is that you have to move the selection line below the “found” item before you “Find Next.” Once you find the entry with MRT.exe, delete it.

The Akamai NetSession Interface is a secure application that may be installed on your computer to improve the speed, reliability, and efficiency for downloads and streams from the Internet. It is used by many software and media publishers to deliver files or streams to you.
“The information that Akamai does capture is similar to a web server and that information is utilized for troubleshooting and network performance monitoring only.” That means that NetSession continually sends information about your computer to Akamai.
They say that NetSession will only use your computer when it is “idle or utilizing minimal network resources.” That means that NetSession is constantly monitoring your network use, and sending that information to Akamai. And since bandwidth usage varies from second to second, that info must be sent up to Akamai a lot. Wait a minute, didn’t they just say they only captured the sort of info that web servers capture? Web servers don’t capture info on bandwidth use. What other information does Akamai capture? I could not find any specifics on their site.
So if you install NetSession, you will be joining a peer-to-peer network, and allowing Akamai to deliver files from your computer at times when Akamai deems you to be utilizing your bandwidth minimally.
I also have a security concern about the files I am receiving from NetSession. It seems like it would not be difficult to download a file using NetSession, modify it to carry a virus payload, and then leave that computer idle, and wait for NetSession to transmit the infected file to other NetSession users. I would hope that Akamai has taken steps to address this concern, but I can’t find any information on that.
How can I see what it does and control its activity?
NetSession provides a console that gives you the ability to review your NetSession activity and manage settings.
On Windows, open your Windows Control Panel, then click the icon or link to the Akamai NetSession Interface Control Panel.
On Mac OS X, the Akamai extension icon is found under Other –> Akamai on the System Preferences pane.
Does NetSession harm my computer or violate my privacy? (Is it malware?)
No. The NetSession Interface is safe and secure and does not contain spyware, adware, or a virus. It does not gather and transmit your personal information, nor does it harm your computer. Its purpose is to be a tool to improve the speed, reliability, and efficiency for downloads and streams.
